Cracking within 2 winters
Wrong mix ratio or missing expansion beads cause hairline-to-structural cracks. Once water gets in, frost cycles open the cracks wider every year.

Service overview
External rendering is your home's first line of defence against driving rain, frost and wind — and the single biggest upgrade you can make to kerb appeal. Done right, it adds 25+ years of weather protection and several percent to resale value. Done wrong, it traps damp and cracks within two winters.
Rendering is a cementitious or polymer-based coating applied to external walls in multiple coats over a prepared substrate. We install traditional sand-and-cement render, monocouche through-coloured render, silicone render and full external wall insulation (EWI) systems.
Homeowners refreshing tired pebble dash, landlords protecting investment property, self-builders specifying the right system, and commercial clients re-cladding offices, schools and retail units.
When existing render is cracked, hollow or stained; when you're replacing pebble dash; on new builds requiring weather protection and aesthetic finish; or as part of an EWI retrofit to lower heating bills.
Render is structural-grade weatherproofing. A poorly mixed coat, missed bead, or wrong system specification leads to cracking, water ingress and a £15k+ strip-and-redo. Certified renderers deliver a 25-year system that performs and looks the part.
The cost of getting it wrong
We're called out to fix other renderers' jobs more often than any other trade. Here's what we see — and how to avoid it.
Wrong mix ratio or missing expansion beads cause hairline-to-structural cracks. Once water gets in, frost cycles open the cracks wider every year.
Cracked or hollow render lets water reach the masonry. Two or three winters later, internal walls show damp patches and mould — and the fix is external, not a coat of damp-seal paint.
Over-trowelling, inconsistent coat thickness, or starting/stopping in the wrong place leaves visible cold joints. Once dry, it can't be fixed without re-rendering.
Hollow-sounding pebble dash is end-of-life. Left in place, it falls in sheets — usually onto a car, conservatory or path.
Our process
Same process on every job — domestic, commercial, single-room or full house.
We assess substrate, exposure rating, existing finishes and your budget — then specify the right system (sand/cement, monocouche, silicone or EWI).
Within 24 hours: scope, materials, scaffold, prep, render system, finish colour, snagging and clean-down — all priced.
Scaffold up, substrate cleaned and stabilised, beads and stop ends fitted, mesh embedded at vulnerable points.
Base coat applied to specification thickness, cured, then topcoat applied in the chosen system and colour.
Scaffold down, site cleaned, written workmanship guarantee issued — backed by manufacturer system warranty where applicable.
Why MCB
Correctly specified systems carry 25-year manufacturer warranties — backed by our workmanship guarantee.
A re-render is the most cost-effective way to modernise a tired exterior and lift resale value.
No more repainting every 5 years — through-coloured silicone render holds its colour for 15–20 years.
Silicone render sheds rain, dirt and biological growth — staying cleaner for longer than painted finishes.
Paired with EWI, render adds insulation that can cut heating bills by 20–35%.
Manufacturer-trained on K Rend, Weber, Parex and Wetherby systems. Public liability insured to £5m.
In depth
Choosing the right render system is the single biggest decision in any external project. Here's how we specify across the North West, where wind-driven rain and freeze-thaw cycles are unusually harsh.
Traditional sand-and-cement render remains the most economical option and, when correctly mixed in 3 coats with appropriate beads and expansion joints, lasts 25+ years. Its weakness is painting — you'll re-paint every 5–7 years to maintain the look.
Monocouche render is a through-coloured one-coat cementitious system applied at 15mm in a single pass. It's faster than traditional render and removes the paint-cycle cost — but it's less forgiving to mix and apply, which is why we only let certified renderers near it.
Silicone render is the premium option — a thin-coat polymer system applied over a base coat and mesh, available in any RAL colour, with hydrophobic self-cleaning properties. It's our most-specified system on contemporary properties across Rochdale, Bury and the Rossendale Valley.
External Wall Insulation (EWI) wraps the building in insulation before the render system goes on. Heating bills typically drop 20–35%, the building gains 25mm–150mm of insulation, and the render finish is identical to a non-insulated installation. Funded under several Lancashire schemes — ask us about eligibility.
Domestic re-renders are typically 5–10 days on site for a semi-detached, including scaffold. We minimise disruption with phased elevations.
Commercial projects are programme-driven with phased scaffold, traffic management plans where required, and main-contractor coordination.
